Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) was the third Prime Minister of India, serving from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her death. She is the longest-serving prime minister in India’s history and the only woman to ever hold the position. She was assassinated by two of her bodyguards in 1984. Indira Gandhi was named “ Woman of the Millennium” by a BBC poll in 1999.
“To be liberated, woman must feel free to be herself, not in rivalry to man but in the context of her own capacity and her personality.”
