Skill atrophy happens anytime a new technology comes up. Our phones remember numbers. We no longer remember numbers. Our phones now navigate for us. We’re not as good at navigation. What was the last time you did a long division problem and did it correctly and well? Because we have calculators. Right? So I think we are going to see skill atrophy across the board, and I don’t know that that’s a problem.
Because every time we’ve done that before, we have discovered new skills that we as humans can develop that are much more important and meaningful than the skills that we have lost. And so what we should be thinking about right now is not how to retain skills that are likely to be less relevant. But how do we develop the skills like long term strategic thinking, asking the right questions, being creative in coming up with new ideas that maybe the machines are not quite as good at today? And those are the skills that we should be honing in ourselves and especially in our children.
