While there are exceptions to the male-dominated super-star world of art—Frida Kahlo or Georgia O’Keefe for example—women rise to the top of the culture industry ladder less frequently than their male counterparts. However, this is not the case in Pakistan, says Newsweek. Because men have not traditionally considered the art market a profitable industry, preferring creative industries like illustration and advertising, there is much open space for women to rise. Female Pakistani artists and curators are gaining international exposure in hubs like New York and Tokyo, and as developing art markets open to the West, look for Pakistan to lead the way.
